Onslaught was assign together by Bristol, England, guitar player Nige Rockettand drummer Steve Grice in the early '80s. The two musicians were working to spirt an ultra-aggressive, rapid alloy legal that was becoming more than and more popular in the years of early Slayer and Metallica. In 1985, the couplet were linked by bass player Jase Stallard and vocalizer Paul Mahoney. The quartet chop-chop worked up enough corporeal for a book and later that year, the debut Power From Hell was recorded and released on U.K. independent platter label Cor. A forceful, if not alone professional sounding travail, 1985's Power From Hell along with Slayer's Hell Awaits are among the better speed metal offerings of the yr. The 1986 follow-up The Force was an even stronger endeavor released to begin with on the a great mete out bigger Music for Nations depression Under One Flag. In a snatch of an odd lineup variety, Stallard switched instrumental duties by becoming the group's second guitar player, and new vocalizer Sy Keeler replaced Mahoney world Health Organization took over Stallard's vacated bass duties. A more competent recording, The Force sounded better than the group's debut and retained many of the Slayer-like thresh sensibilities. New bassist James Hinder replaced Mahoney as the ex-singer world Health Organization was finally demoted out of the ranks of Onslaught. As a unplayful following for the band began to emerge, they were finally sign language to Polydor depression London Records. After recruiting former Grim Reaper vocalizer Steve Grimmett and guitarist Rob Trotman (alternate Stallard) into the banding, the start major-label elbow grease for Onslaught, In Search of Sanity, was released on London in 1989. While their former recordings sported an highly voiceless consonant edge and an near death alloy stance, In Search of Sanity stirred up the group's sound into some pretty standard metal territory. While a technically superior transcription, Grimmett added little personality and the group's interesting hardcore roots substantially weakened on this button. Perhaps due to the immense delay between releases, and the curious move toward a comparatively mainstream musical coming, In Search of Sanity was a critical and commercial nonstarter for the thrash veterans. Grimmett left the group in 1990 to form Lionsheart and the band was dropped by their record label. Tony O'Hara signed as vocaliser for the band, just Onslaught never recorded anything after In Search of Sanity and they finally disbanded in 1991. With only collar releases over an eight-year career, and with various confutative card changes, Onslaught were an interesting early speed metal outfit that confused their direction. When compared to the musical singularity and relatively stable memberships of their early life history musical generation, it's gentle to see why Onslaught never had anything close the impact of Slayer or Metallica.

‘The Happening’: Vulture Mourns the Movie That Could've Been

Photo: 20th Century Fox, iStockphoto
The Happening just keeps on disappointing. Yes, M. Night Shyamalan's new movie is bad — but was it really the calamitous disaster that his millions of non-fans were hoping for? We were expecting critics to shred it en masse, but Roger Ebert and Manohla Dargis both let it off the hook (for the most part). And audiences didn't completely hate it either — it made $30 million over the weekend! Most disappointing of all, though, is that the film so easily could've been better (i.e., worse). We procured a copy of The Happening's original screenplay, called The Green Effect (dated January 2007), which — before a rewrite — was rejected by several studios. Astonishingly, without that rewrite, this very bad movie could've been even worse (i.e., worse). After the jump, Vulture mourns The Happening that might've been.

To be fair, sort of, The Green Effect doesn't include The Happening's most guffaw-inducing misstep: a scene in which — honest — a man kills himself by allowing a lion to bite his arms off. He then he walks around bleeding to death, like he's in a slasher movie made by high-school students, while an onlooker shrieks, "What kind of terrorists ARE these?" Apparently, the notes Shyamalan received on The Green Effect included, "Not enough bloodthirsty lions and/or stumps."

More important, though, in The Happening, the idea that malevolent plants can be defeated by true love is subtext. In The Green Effect, it's just … text. At script's climax, Mark Wahlberg's heroic science teacher realizes that the film's evil plants can't kill you with their suicide-causing neurotoxins if they think you're a good person (actual line of dialogue: "This is the final trigger, Alma! They're weeding out our energy! They've become a mood ring. When they see a color they don't like, it sets them off"). In Shyamalan's original vision, the plants kill mean old religious fanatics, but they spare Marky Mark because he and his unfaithful wife (in Effect, the wife's extramarital dalliance seems to include more than just tiramisu) still have a marriage worth saving. It's a twist on the classic: "If you love something, go outside with it into a field of toxic plants. If you survive, then your marriage is sound. If you're driven to abruptly strangle yourself with the garden hose, it never was."

But the best moment in The Green Effect comes in one of its descriptions of action: "The house by the road becomes very quiet as THE TREES WHISPER MISCHIEVOUSLY." You'd think nothing could be more difficult for a director than teaching Mark Wahlberg to act entirely with his right eyebrow, as he does through most of The Happening, but that's because you didn't know Shyamalan could've, instead, ended up standing in a grove of trees trying to explain to them that their whispering wasn't mischievous enough. Sigh. —Linda Holmes

Pete Wentz - Wentz Slams Mtv Bosses

Newlywed PETE WENTZ has taken time out of celebrating his nuptials to launch a scathing attack on music network MTV.

The Fall Out Boy bassist is "frustrated" by bosses at the channel because of the small amount of airtime actually dedicated to playing music.

The 28-year-old has even started a poll on his online blog, asking fans, "What's the number one thing you hate about MTV?"

And Wentz says, "I could only assume that you would be completely frustrated with the same things I am with MTV. It is a network called music television that does not play music videos. And when they do play videos, it is in 30 second clips on (show) TRL or underneath the credits of whatever reality show.

"The truth is whole videos should be played. Bands should play live. Premieres should be a big deal like they used to be, not just a snippet of a video. Artists should be able to let their imaginations go and know that people will be able to see what they have crafted. Artists should talk about their videos. we should and can make the music video important again."

Tales of hex and drugs

Tales of hex and drugs

AMERICAN prog rock band The Mars Volta has warned Australian fans about playing with black magic.

On the eve of an Australian visit, founding member and frontman Cedric Bixler-Zavala says the group has encountered some "very bad experiences" after messing around with a ouija board bought in a curio shop in Jerusalem last year.
"I don't advise young Australians to mess around with that kind of stuff," he says.

Video: Click here to watch Mars Volta video clips

"Do not get involved with it blindly. We did and something bad was born."
According to Bixler-Zavala, after using the ouija board the sound engineer working on the band's album, The Bedlam in Goliath, refused to hand over new recordings and then suffered a mental breakdown.
"In addition to that, the studio that we were working in suddenly flooded twice and then songs just somehow disappeared off existing tapes," he says.
"Lots of weird unaccounted-for stuff happened."
The Mars Volta was formed in 2001 from the remains of the band At the Drive-in and is generally classified as a progressive rock act.
These guys certainly do not play by the rules and use elements of jazz, punk, psychedelic, funk, metal and Latin music in their distinctive sound.
Indeed, The Mars Volta rocks hard and is widely known for its wild, energetic, over-the-top and improvised live shows, as well as its usually concept-based studio albums.
The band's first album was the bizarrely titled How Do You Dub? You Fight for Dub. You Plug Dub in.
Other interestingly titled albums from the prolific eight-piece include De-Loused in the Comatorium, Frances the Mute and Amputecture.
Bixler-Zavala says the act got its name from a book by noted movie director Federico Fellini about the art of film-making.
Indeed, The Mars Volta seems fascinated by movies - the music that the group uses to introduce live shows comes from the spaghetti western classic A Fistful of Dollars and the cult film A Clockwork Orange.
The band plans to release a big-budget movie about its on-the-road exploits soon.
"I hope most of all that our sense of humour and love of fun comes out in it," Bixler-Zavala says.
"In a lot of ways people don't realise we are really like that pretend band Spinal Tap.
"Many times we have been lost backstage at a show trying to find our way to the stage."
The singer says he is a big fan of Australian films.
"I really liked the film Rabbit-Proof Fence and Chopper," he says.
"Nick Cave's film, The Proposition, was a classic.
"I would go to see any movie that guy wrote. He is a huge inspiration for us in The Mars Volta with his music as well."
Bixler-Zavala says he is also a longtime fan of television time traveller Doctor Who.
"We incorporate characters from the show in our backdrop on stage and play the show's theme song all the time at the end of our concerts."
The frontman says the band hopes to avoid using a big record company to release their next CD.
"I hate that whole thing where the record companies tell you which day is free for your album to be released," he says.
"As if music fans care what day it is released.
"To be not allowed to release an album because it does not fit into the major spending plans of a leading supermarket chain really sucks.
"It destroys all the creativity and joy that goes into making it.
"Fitting in with the corporate structure really stops the momentum and the whole project can turn rusty and flat very easily. We are seriously looking at our options at the moment.
"The way music is sold nowadays, who knows what format it will come out in?"
At one stage of their career various members of The Mars Volta had severe drug addictions and alcohol problems and were widely known for their "risky" behaviour.
While on tour in the US with close friends the Red Hot Chili Peppers, band member Jeremy Ward was found dead in his hotel room from a heroin overdose.
Bixler-Zavala says The Mars Volta members now steer well clear of hard drugs.
"We don't touch opiates any more and actually exercise all the time," he says.
"Now, honestly, one of my favourite things to do is just go skateboarding after the show."
The members of The Mars Volta are keen to get back to doing live work after spending considerable time in the recording studio.
"We have not toured solidly for about two years now, so we are all really fired up to play well. Australian audiences have always been good to us," he said.
The Mars Volta plays the Forum on June 23. Tickets on sale April 16 on 132 849.
